Day 1 (Monday 13th): Data Management (1/2 day)
Data Storage in file archives & data base systems:

  • 1330 File Archives & NetCDF
  • 1400 CERA Database System and NetCDF
  • 1430 Break
  • 1500 Regional Model CLM and NetCDF
  • 1530 NetCDF-enabling an Oracle database using Java (experience from UK DEWS project)
  • 1545 Discussion:
    • How does NetCDF compare to GRIB in database storage?
    • What is the ideal data atom in a tape archive/database?
    • Can a standard data storage structure be defined for Earth System model output?
  • 1900 (or 2000) workshop dinner (if desired)

Day 2 (Tuesday 14th): Post Processing(1/2 day)

  • 0900 cdo postprocessing tool
  • 0930 Overview of coco progress
  • 1000 CDAT in the BADC infrastructure: building tools around it - including
    1. The case for rejecting CDAT and
    2. The case for building on CDAT.
  • 1030 Break
  • 1100 SRE Monitoring tool (cdat & tttwww )(cdo & GrADS & tttww)
  • 1130 Discussion about cdat and cdo:
    • Problems with CDAT - can we collect and feed back to PCMDI.
    • Development plans for cdo.
    • I/O
      - shouldn't we be seeking a community wide solution for data conversion?
      - a single library, written in C, that reads/ writes NetCDF, GRIB (1 & 2), HDF 5?, other?
    • Visualisation tools
      - what else is out there in the open-source arena?
      - PyNGL/PyNCL, GMT, Mat Plot Lib, GNU Plot?.
      - Is the best approach to attach specific visualisations to specific tools that do them best?
